Contemplating

I was having a drink at the café tonight, sitting at the end of the risen platform outside. I often sit there and stare blankly at the ever busy Beaufort St. As more and more people walked past I started to wonder how many of them had a livejournal? (should that be a question mark or a full stop? hmm)
It's rare to find people who haven't heard of livejournal these days but it's starting to be common place to hear people admit they have one.

Although I have my share of friends only posts, I don't understand why some people need completely friends only journals. Especially those who'll befriend anybody who shows any interest in them anyway. I guess it's part security and part embarrassment. I use friends posts to keep some names away from the general public but some days I really don't care and fail to change my security settings. As for personal security I think my walls have come almost completely down. Hell, I have my phone number available via my userinfo for a filtered group of friends. If I had a P.O. box I'd chuck that up there too.

Damn - I started rambling there and now I can't remember my point.
oh well - maybe I'll remember tomorrow.

Oh, you've got green eyes
Oh, you've got blue eyes
Oh, you've got grey eyes
And I've never seen anyone quite like you before
No, I've never met anyone quite like you before

most people have heard of myspace at least, or another blog/journal site. you do bring up an interesting topic, a journal can be completely friends only with filters in place as well, I don't care who has my number, nor do I care if they have my address, but I'd rather not be stalked at home :oP

on a seperate note, I LOVE New Order :oD

woo - you recognised the lyrics! :)

back to the main topic:
I guess the general community knows of blogger because of all the publicity it got. LJ was almost always left out of lists of blogging sites for some weird reason. Myspace is still knew isn't it? I don't have a myspace page (and will never have one) but it does seem to have a big following with the younger crowd. I agree with the "non-caring" attitude towards numbers and addresses - it's more fun to be open than to be closed off, but there are risks (as you pointed out). I guess that leads into the subject of a completely friends only journal. "friends only with filters" is almost the same as "public with filters for friends", it all depends how private you want to be. Filters are great but should you really have to worry about your words (and the way people will interperet them) so much?

I'd love to see some sort of sociological study on livejournal demographics :P

kinda hard to miss those lyrics bwahahah my boyfriend (before it was truly official) compare my eyes to that song four times in one day, then sent me the song. it has a sentimental attatchment to it now because of the comparison :o)

now back to the main topic at hand, yes. A LOT of people have to worry about what they do or do not say in their journals/blogs due to the fact if they work for a major corperation and the post isn't placed as friends only of some sort, it will be caught on if they talk trash about said company. I have learned over time that I also have had to filter people out of the things I say because they refused to be open minded to different ideas, or to the truth of the matter at hand, or I've had to be vague, being vague though has made people more paranoid about their actions and made assumptions in regards to them, which in due cause has caused them, and myself more stress than needed. frankly, I think if they just don't ask first then they are wasting effortand causing unwanted drama. hence my filters... besides, nobody wants to see my boobs save for a few people :oP

Myspace is still slightly new, but not so much that everyone and their dog has a profile.. I keep mine up for the sheer fact that it entertains me to no end when people who know me, find me, add, me and then send me messages that I rarely respond to; reason being that I probably went to high school witht hem and they are out of my life for a reason.

I agree with you, a study on lj's demographics would be bad ass.

Your icon is great!

Anyways, I have a friends-only journal and still add whoever because I have a younger sister who has once found my (then public) journal and printed it out and showed my mom...so yeah. I also have certain ex-friends who like to stalk me. There are always reasons!

Yes, true, there are always reasons, I won't deny that.
I kind of went into a little rant last night when I wrote this. My views are flawed but create interesting discussions :)

for me, I just like to have a general idea of who is reading my journal, you know? And some posts are private and stuff.

Yeah - you fall into a different catagory now though. You are picky with who you let in. There's nothing wrong with that :)

That icon ROCKS!

Mine is all friends-only because I have an ex who used to read it and I don't want him reading what I'm up too ;)

Plus, I'm paranoid, I like feeling secure. If that can really be called secure, but never mind!

Can we call it "soft-security"? It's not real security but it does the job and keeps our minds at rest. It's amazing what a little padlock image can do.
